Canada is calling this initiative “An Immigration System for Canada’s Future”.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the launch of a new “broad-based engagement” project titled “An Immigration System for Canada’s Future” in a news release yesterday.

This programme will use gathered public opinion and ideas to assist Canada establish “an immigration system that is strong, easy to traverse, and adaptable to change,” with a focus on collaboration. Canada feels that in order to design the best immigration system, it will be essential to include public opinion because “we need to guarantee that our policies and programmes are linked with the requirements of our communities.”

What is this initiative about?

Canada is “launching this initiative to give [Canadians and a wide range of other stakeholders with the opportunity] to share their ideas and perspectives on how we can build a stronger, more adaptive immigration system for Canada’s future,” with the first in-person dialogue session in Halifax taking place yesterday and being presided over by Immigration Minister Sean Fraser.

Built with the intention of capturing “a diversity of perspectives”, the many groups that will be given a chance to provide input and ideas through this effort include “all levels of government, businesses, academia, post-secondary institutions, settlement organizations, implicated sectors in Canada and our clients.”

According to the press release, this initiative by the Canadian government would generally consist of additional in-person dialogue sessions like the one in Halifax, as well as “thematic workshops and a survey for the public and our clients.” This initiative is all about allowing Canadians to shape policies.

As per IRCC “the input gathered [through this initiative] will inform Canada’s future immigration policies and programs and will help shape a system that will benefit communities across the country for decades to come.”

What is the future of this initiative?

According to the official announcement from IRCC, Canada’s “An Immigration System for Canada’s Future” programme is currently anticipated to last through the spring of 2023. The release ends by urging Canadians from all across the nation to participate. Overall this will allow Canadians to shape future immigration policies.

Those who “would like to contribute to the future” of Canadian immigration, says the press release, are invited to partake in a survey that will be launched by IRCC and made available to the public “later in March”.
