The Express Entry category-based selection goals for 2023 from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) are further clarified in a new Globe and Mail report.
In late June, IRCC started holding Express Entry draws based on category. There are a total of six categories, which were selected to meet particular economic objectives.
The Globe and Mail reported that IRCC will place a lot more emphasis on recruiting STEM vocations based on information acquired from IRCC. This year, it is anticipated that between 28% and 31% of invites issued through Express Entry will go to individuals with recent expertise in specific STEM fields, such as software developers and data scientists.
There has only ever been one batch of STEM invitations, which 500 applicants received.
Compared to other occupational groups, STEM careers have a substantially higher objective. The desired range for individuals who are fluent in French is specifically 11% to 15%. The aim for specific health care occupations is nine to twelve percent, for trades it is three to four percent, and for transportation and agriculture, it is one to two percent.
What is Express Entry?
The method that IRCC employs to manage applications from skilled professionals seeking to immigrate permanently to Canada is called Express Entry. It oversees the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP).
Candidates are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) after submitting a profile through Express Entry. The CRS evaluates candidates according to their age, education, language proficiency, work experience, and other factors using a points-based methodology. The highest-scoring applicants will be chosen from the Express Entry pool and given an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency by the Canadian government.
Express Entry has three different types of draws:
- General rounds of invitation: IRCC invites those with the highest-ranking CRS scores to apply for permanent residence.
- Program-specific rounds of invitation: IRCC invites those with the highest-ranking CRS scores who are eligible for a specific Express Entry program.
- Category-based rounds of invitation: IRCC invites those with the highest-ranking CRS scores who are eligible for specific categories designated by IRCC aimed to promote certain economic goals.
What is category-based Express Entry selection?
IRCC has recently launched category-based selection draws for Express Entry candidates. IRCC intends to focus on Express Entry candidates who have a strong French language proficiency or work experience in the following fields:
- Healthcare
- Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
- Trades, such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors
- Transport
- Agriculture and agri-food
Following a public survey that got 289 answers from diverse stakeholders around the nation, labor market estimates, and suggestions from IRCC partners and the provinces and territories, these categories were determined.
Three draws for French language proficiency have been conducted since the introduction of category-based drawings, inviting 6,900 individuals to submit applications for permanent residence. There have also been two draws for healthcare jobs that invited 2,000 people each, as well as one for a trades occupation that invited 1,500 applicants.
